And, as it turned out, Jay. Archibald wrapped one set of claws around my shrinking middle, and the other around Jay, and took off with both of us in tow. We watched, helpless, as Mabyn and Jenifry Redclover receded beneath us â and Jory the kennel-keeper, too, with our pup still in his arms.
âInconvenient,â observed Jay, the word emerging as a squeak.
Archibaldâs grip was a bit tight, at that. I was feeling breathless myself, and I felt like I had an iron band vice-tight around my ribs. âArchie,â I called. âYou couldnât squeeze a bit less, by any chance? We are fragile creatures, prone to breakage.â
The dragon expelled a whistle of air through his nostrils, and to my surprise, huffed out a clear No.
âOh,â I said.
âYou might fall,â the dragon explained.
âThat would make for some serious breakage,â I had to agree.
âFair,â said Jay. âBut donât squeeze too tight. We ought to arrive alive at the Mayorâs, no?â
âThe Mayor?â said Archibald. âWhy would you want to see her?â
âThat⦠isnât that where we are going?â
âNoâ¦â said Archibald, and something about the way he said the word struck me as a bit shifty.
I patted his leg with the hand that wasnât clinging desperately to my shoulder-bag, and Mauf. âWhere are we going, then?â I asked.
âThere is something you should see,â said the dragon.
âOh?â
A pause. âI⦠I heard what you were saying,â said Archibald, and he definitely sounded shamefaced now.
âFrom how far away?â Jay yelped.
âI have very good ears,â said Archibald with dignity.
âAnd a fair bit of magick, too?â I suggested.
âWell, anyway,â said the dragon. âI used to take Melmidoc places.â
âYou knew Melmidoc Redclover?â
âHis brother was the longest-running Mayor Dapplehaven has ever had,â said Archibald. âThey were always together, and so⦠we were always together, too.â
Could a dragon be forlorn? Apparently. âYou miss your friends?â I guessed.
âI do not like Doryty,â said Archibald. âShe is foul-tempered.â His enormous tail thrashed.
âWe did not like her very much either,â I said soothingly.
âNo one does.â
âOdd, then,â said Jay, âthat she is the Mayor. How did that happen?â
âNo one else wanted the job. It is very boring.â
I risked a glance down. Archibald was taking us well away from Dapplehaven, and the ground was rising steeply beneath us. We were, I judged, sailing up the side of a low peak I had briefly glimpsed at some distance from the town. It did not, at least from this angle, look scaleable by any normal means.
âIs this where you used to take Melmidoc?â I asked.
âMelmidoc and Drystan,â said Archibald happily. âAll the time!â
Jay put in, âHave you taken anybody else there since?â
âOnce. The Mayor made me do it. They took away everything that was Melmidocâs, and they made it so I am not allowed to land there.â
âThey⦠how did they do that?â said Jay.
âOh, there are spikes,â said the dragon cheerfully. âSo I will have to drop you.â
âOnto spikes?!â
âThere is a bit that is safe,â said Archibald, with enviable serenity. âYou will not break, because you are smaller than I am.â
âHow are weâ¦â I began.
